An optimized summer camp flight schedule

Angel Flight West (AFW) conducts over 4,500 flights per year with its network of pilots. Around 500 of those flights take place each summer, transporting children to camps like Camp Kindle (a camp for kids affected by HIV/AIDS), Champ Camp (a camp for burn survivors) and The Painted Turtle (a camp for children with serious medical conditions), among others. The team at Angel Flight West was looking for an easy to use and effective solution to plan the schedule for these flights. Willem-Jan van Hoeve, Carnegie Bosch Associate Professor of Operations Research from Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business, presented this problem to his students, who developed an AIMMS-based application to help AFW tackle this planning challenge.
